PERSONAL STATEMENT

 

  1. Who am I, what I’ve been through, and things that I like?

My name is SeongJu Kim. I’m currently a Junior in IID, Yonsei University. One word that defines me as a whole is ‘enthusiasm’. It does not mean that I am enthusiastic in all kinds of things. Rather, I easily get enthusiastic when I bump into something that captures my eyes. However, since I do have a lot of interests, I can say that I am indeed enthusiastic in most of the things, to say the least. The followings are some keywords that I feel most passionate about.

  • Art

I believe a lot of students majoring in IID would have a hobby in drawing and painting (I do know that some definitely aren’t). My love for art started when I was really young. I have no doubt that drawing was my first hobby since I knew how to grab a pencil. I used to dream to go to those famous Art (middle) schools when I was in elementary school. As a prep student for Art school, I spent all my 5-6th grade days in my art academy, in front of my easel. I was quite confident with my skills, but for some reason, I failed the entrance exam. This incident, a shocking and unexpected event to me, later became an opportunity for me to look around and explore all the fun in this world expect for drawing and painting. I still love to describe what I see and what I feel with my pen and pencil. Recently, I got a new ipad, so I am working on with some digital painting skills.

  • Concerts, theatre; music, musical, film

I love going to concerts and theatres. Just to let you know, I have no interest in singing or acting. I do not want to go up on stage, but I die for watching others on stage or on camera. It is such a bliss that I can watch a work done by all those talented people and focus on my own feelings at the time. When I was freshman, I went into our musical club in Yonsei, ROTHEMS. I worked as one of the costume staffs for a year and a half. The time when I spent days and nights at the studios full of sewing machines were certainly one of my best moments in college. It was fun and extremely touching to see the costumes I made to go up stage and make the actors shine. After ROTHEMS, I spent some time at other drama clubs out of school to learn and create as a director. Concert halls and theatres give you absolute chills, and I hope you all could take a chance to feel it. I dare you to go capture the moment.

  • Nature, animals

Loving for the nature and creatures beside human is one strict rule that I possess. I believe that this love first came out from the doubt: is human above all living things? For me, the answer is a big fat NO. I know for sure that we, meaning creatures on Earth including human, are all equal and humans do not have the right to dominate over others. Due to the COVID-19 situation, I feel stronger feelings about how human should act toward the nature. We should change our arrogant attitudes and start the change. And I agree that we should not expect others to change before we change. Therefore, I try to be a vegan. I stopped eating meat (cow, pig, chicken, and others) since last year and I am sure that there is no way for me to quit unless there is a really good reason. I hope for the best of Earth and wish that everyone could give themselves a change for the better future. 

  • Idealist

There is this quote that I recently ran into on google: “The best way to predict the future is to create it.” I can say that I am a proud idealist. I believe that people can be kind. I believe that I can bring a change. I believe that I can do anything and become everything that I wish. Some people, realists, say that I am too dreamy and full of optimistic views. Some even worry about me being idealistic. I do agree, sometimes. But I would like to argue, “What’s the point of living if the world is just the same without you?”

  1. My dreams

In terms of career, mine is to become a content producer. I would like to work in a broadcasting company or a content production company. In terms of dreams, mine is to become a starting point of a trend or trigger a big (positive) change in the society. I believe the greatest honor of a content producer is not only that your content going viral but also making people relate to and agree with your works.

  1. What I would like to learn from this course

I am willing to learn how to understand the users. It has become so important to understand my audience and create something based on what they would take interest. Also, I am looking forward to seeing other peers’ works. Ideas do not come from our inside. I believe that looking at others’ work and sharing opinions will become a fresh impetus for all of us.

[젤다의 전설: 야생의 숨결]은 자유도가 굉장히 높은 오픈 월드 게임으로, 게임은 최소한의 나아갈 방향만을 제시할 뿐, 어떤 길을 선택하여 나갈지는 전적으로 플레이어에게 달려있습니다. 심지어는 그저 사냥하고 풍경을 감상하며 시간을 보내도 아무런 문제가 없습니다. 출처: 닌텐도 온라인 스토어 플레이어는 튜토리얼 스테이지를 플레이하며 오픈 월드의 법칙을 익히고 앞으로의 모험을 기대하게 됩니다. 저는 이미 튜토리얼 스테이지를 지나왔기 때문에 유튜브에서 참고할 수 있는 영상 링크를 남겨두겠습니다. 모든 플레이어의 ‘링크’는 같은 겉모습을 하고 있습니다. 하지만 제가 ‘링크’로서 하이랄에서 보낸 시간이 쌓여 만들어진 제 ‘링크’는 다른 이의 ‘링크’와는 다릅니다. 하이랄을 탐험하며 챌린지와 미션을 완료하고 잊었던 기억을 되찾으며 만든 제 지도와 모험 수첩을 소개합니다! ② NPC와의 대화 [젤다의 전설: 야생의 숨결]에는 여러 마을이 존재합니다. 각 마을에는 마을의 대장격인 NPC가 존재합니다. 이들은 공통적으로 ‘링크’의 정체를 알고 있으며, ‘링크’에게 메인 챌린지를 전달하는 역할을 맡고 있습니다. 마을에 거주하는 주민들 또는 마구간이나 길에서 만나는 이들과도 대화할 수 있습니다. 이들은 ‘링크’에게 미니 챌린지를 전달하기도 하고 ‘사당’의 위치를 알려주기도 합니다. 물론 모든 대화가 챌린지와 관련되는 것은 아니기 때문에 저는 이들이 정말 하이랄에서 살아가고 있...

Critiques for Week 3

  01 Gaver, Interactions - Cultural Probes (1999) 'Cultural Probes', a carefully designed package of postcards, maps, cameras, photo albums and others, were an artist-designer type of approach specifically made to elicit inspiring responses. It was used during the a research project that aimed to increase the presence of the elderly in diverse local communities such as Oslo, Bijlmer, and Peccioli. The probes were handed out to the selected elderly respondents in a packet form. The probes allowed the elderly to write down or record their lives through the process of answering to oblique questions or describing their life and surroundings. The aim of this research was not to take an objective look at the elderly's responses, on the other hand, it tried to understand the respondents in an impressionistic way. 게임월드에서 살아보기 #3

  부제:   Stages of Action Model 과 UAF 로 젤다의 전설:야생의 숨결 분석하기 [젤다의 전설: 야생의 숨결]은 자율도가 매우 높은 대표적인 오픈 월드 게임으로, 플레이어가 원하는 때에 원하는 곳으로 자유롭게 이동하며 게임 속 세상을 탐험할 수 있다는 것이 특징입니다. 저 또한 이 부분에서 매력을 느껴 이 게임을 시작하게 되었습니다. 그러나 플레이를 할 수록 저도 모르는 사이 적재적소에 놓인 퀘스트를 완수하며 결국에는 게임이 의도하는 방향대로 나아가고 있는 모습을 볼 수 있었습니다. 게임을 플레이하며 설명이 너무 많아 제대로 읽지 않고 ‘다음’ 버튼을 연타하는 경험, 모두들 해보았을 것 같습니다. 그런데 [젤다의 전설: 야생의 숨결]에서는  ‘메인 챌린지’, ‘사당 챌린지’, 그리고 ‘미니 챌린지’ 를 통해 그런 구구절절한 설명 없이 플레이어에게 이 게임 속 법칙을 알려주고 있었습니다. ‘메인 챌린지’는 게임의 뼈대를 이루는 퀘스트로 플레이어에게 최소한의 이정표를 제시하는 역할을 하고, ‘사당 챌린지’는 플레이어가 다양한 조작법을 익히고 캐릭터를 강화할 수 있도록 보조하는 역할을 합니다. 그렇다면 ‘미니 챌린지’의 역할은 무엇일까요? ‘미니 챌린지’는 플레이어가 반드시 완수해야하는 유형의 챌린지가 아닙니다. 주로 마을 주민이 부탁하는 일을 해주는 등의 시시콜콜한 일들이라 빠르게 엔딩을 보고 싶은 플레이어에게는 무의미하게 느껴질 수도 있다는 생각도 듭니다. 이번 과제에서는  [젤다의 전설: 야생의 숨결] 내 ‘미니 챌린지’가 사용자에게 어떤 경험을 선사하고 있는지 를 중심으로 분석을 진행해, ‘미니 챌린지’의 역할과 의의에 관해 생각해보는 시간을 갖고자 합니다.
